Awesome point! I suppose I just notice some differences in overall methodology to this day. I do agree with you though. It most certainly changes lives. I haven't written off doing private I coaching with the coach at crossfit just yet, I suppose I am just more or less hesitant. I am REALLY interested in barbell work, and the coach I met at this gym knows his lifting stuff without a doubt! I HAVE visited other crossfit facilities that completely turned me off though, which is why I wanted to give it a second stab.

Interesting to note that you are involved with crossfit as well. I am by no means trying to "bash" crossfit, I am just noticing the differences across certain facilities. I'm super curious about your crossfit certifications and the process behind them. Do tell! How does it compare to the RKC? Let me know!

Janelle, I think you'll find that much as the squeaky wheel gets the grease, the gyms that have the worst reputations get the most talk time and press. As someone who is CF certified across several different skill sets, and still connected to the CF community, I can tell you right now that the majority of CF gym owners and coaches make it their life to self educate to be better for their clients, just as we do. Very few are in it for a buck, and the ones who do push the reps before quality stance get injured clients, then lose clients very quickly. CF exhibits a very interesting form of natural selection where by the above situation, the less quality affiliates go out of business quickly, and the ones who care for their clients and put quality over quantity thrive, that was the whole point of the business model they created (aside from not having any liability for the affiliates as well ;) )

These athletes who go to the games didn't get there by putting quality over quantity, and many of them are coaches. While I'm glad you tried out a class, you may want to consider going through a fundamentals or onramping program (or at least visiting a few more facilities) before giving the world your evaluation of what CrossFit is. While I made a decision to focus on kettlebells, I have many friends that have changed lives by coaching and had their lives changed by joining an affiliate :)

I actually also live here in Pittsburgh . . . isn't it kind of odd that we have a word of our own for the plural "you" (i.e. Yinz) but *not* for the plural "us". We gotta work on that! Keep up the good work Janelle . . .
